Perspectives on Social Inequality and Wealth

Register now

The symposium will provide an opportunity to present the projects funded in the two funding programs "Social Inequality" and "Perspectives on Wealth" and to facilitate the academic exchange between the project members.

Over the last decades, inequalities – in various states and on a number of socio-economic, political as well as (socio-)cultural dimensions – have increased, despite strong economic growth rates in general. The funding program "Social Inequality" supported by four European foundations focusses on aspects surrounding the development and reproduction of social inequality, especially in light of aspects like Institutions and Networks, Resource Distribution and Inheritance, Technological Change and Digitalization, and Socio-Ecological Processes of Inequality.

Extremely unequal distribution of income and wealth is a recurring source of conflict that presents an ongoing hindrance to human development. With the funding initiative "Perspectives on Wealth", the Volkswagen Foundation aims to initiate a change of perspective involving a shift from poverty research to facets surrounding the phenomenon of wealth to generate conceptual, methodological and empirical findings on the "(Re-)Production of Wealth".

The symposium will provide an opportunity to present the projects funded in both programs and to facilitate the academic exchange between the participants. Beyond these presentations and a poster session, workshops will address concepts, interdisciplinary methods and questions of space and time, and a panel discussion will deal with the transfer of the analyses of inequality and wealth to the public.
