Just look up! Wie wir apokalyptische Botschaften besser wahrnehmen können
Wie lassen sich apokalyptische Szenarien auf wissenschaftlicher Basis so vermitteln, dass wir sie tatsächlich wahrnehmen und darauf eingehen? Diese und weitere Fragen werden im Anschluss an eine Filmvorführung Thema der Science Movie Night am 20. September 2024 im Xplanatorium in Hannover sein.
Nostradamus‘ apokalyptische Prophezeiungen waren vage formuliert und schwer vermittelbar. Moderne wissenschaftliche Risikoeinschätzungen sind zwar konkreter, dennoch scheinen sie in die Öffentlichkeit ebenfalls oft nicht durchzudringen. Dies gilt etwa für die Folgen der Klimakrise oder – wie im Film „Don’t Look Up“ – für Gefahren aus dem All: Wissenschaftler:innen warnen vor einem auf die Erde zurasenden Asteroiden – und treffen in Politik und (Medien-)Öffentlichkeit auf Gleichgültigkeit oder gar Widerstand, nach dem Motto: Schaut nicht nach oben! Die Parallelen zur Klima-Diskussion sind dabei nicht zufällig.
Bei der Science Movie Night diskutieren Expert:innen nach der Filmvorführung darüber, wie wissenschaftliche Warnungen und apokalyptische Botschaften auf uns wirken und wie bessere Wissenschaftskommunikation aussehen könnte.

Where do the Volkswagen Foundation events take place?
The events take place at Herrenhausen Palace, Herrenhäuser Straße 5, 30419 Hannover (Google Maps).
How do I get to the event venue Herrenhausen Palace?
- by public transport: tram lines 4 and 5, bus line 136: stop "Herrenhäuser Gärten" or "Schaumburgstraße".
- by bike: There are bike racks in front of the Herrenhausen Palace conference centre. E-bike batteries should be taken into the building and not left on the bike.
- by car: The car parks around Herrenhausen Palace are subject to a charge. There are a few free car parks in the "Alte Herrenhäuser Straße".
The entrance to the conference centre (three large wooden doors) is located on the west side of the castle, in the side wing, right next to the entrance to the restaurant "Grauwinkels Schlossküche".
When does admission to events start?
The doors will open 45 minutes before the event begins.
How long do the events last?
Evening events like panel discussions last for about 100 - 120 minutes.
How much does admission to Volkswagen Foundation events cost?
Admission to Volkswagen Foundation events is free of charge. In rare cases, access to the Herrenhausen Palace conference centre may only be possible with an admission ticket (which may be subject to a charge). If this is the case, you will find a corresponding note on the website of the respective event.
Is the venue barrier-free?
The Herrenhausen Palace conference centre is barrier-free.
Are the events broadcast live?
Some of our events are also broadcast live. To access, visit the respective event page on our website.
Are the panel discussions recorded?
Many of the events are broadcasted live and/or recorded. Recordings and proceedings of past events can be found in our newsroom and on our YouTube channel.
Is there a cloakroom?
At events held at the Herrenhausen Palace conference centre, you are welcome to use our cloakroom free of charge.
