From experiencing Europe to thinking European? The impact of EU-specific activities on attitudes towards and attachment to the EU (Europaförderung)

During the last decade social scientists have paid intense attention to the relationship between actions of the European Union and position-takings by individuals like the transnational activity, the support for the EU or the emergence of a European identity. However, although there is solid evidence that those who are experiencing Europe abroad have also more pro-European attitudes, feel more attached to the EU and know more about it (Fligstein 2008; Rother/Nebe 2009), it is still an open question what kinds of activities trigger which kind of European thinking. This is due to the fact that until now the research has mainly focused on border crossing activities and thus reduced experiences with Europe to cross-border interactions. Thus the project asks two questions: (a) do both cross- and within-border activities produce pro-European attitudes? and (b) are the less-educated still less pro-European after having experienced the EU? Reacting to this important gap in the literature, the project contributes to our understanding of the formation of pro-European attitudes by studying the role of experience-based Europeanness.

Evolution of eye and head size and shape between Drosophila novamexicana and Drosophila americana - additional support for Europe

One central aim of biological research is to understand the evolution of the breath-taking diversity of body form. Changes in embryonic and postembryonic developmental programs are responsible for the diversification of morphology on which evolution can act and evolutionary-developmental biology (evo-devo) aims to reveal the developmental basis for this variation. The insect head is a complex structure that facilitates basic tasks like interaction with its environment and feeding. According to these fundamental functions, a huge variety of head shapes and especially compound eye morphologies have evolved as adaptation to different ecological niches. In order to learn more about the genetic architecture of variation in head morphology, we want to analyze the molecular basis of natural variation in compound eye and head size and shape within and between species of the Drosophila virilis group of fruit flies. First, geometric morphometrics approaches will be used to identify heritable changes in head size and shape. Then, the developmental stage at which the observed differences in adult morphology first arise, will be identified. And finally, quantitative genetics and genomics methods will be used to identify the genomic loci, which are linked to the observed morphological changes.

War and death during the Bronze Age of southern Iberia - interdisciplinary analysis of the prehistoric fortifications of La Bastida, Murcia - (additional support for Europe)

The research initiatives of Salzmünde and La Bastida share the same archaeological approaches and objectives and they are complementary in their historical focus on prehistoric defensive structures, violence and ritual. Both projects are concerned with the recovery and investigation of outstanding archaeological sites of the European prehistory, which were excavated systematically and extensively during the last years. While the study of the ritual depositions and human burials of Salzmünde provides crucial insight into the social structure, defensive systems and violence during the 4th millennium BC, the archaeological and anthropological record of La Bastida allows to address the same topics during the late 3rd and first half of the 2nd millennium BC. Consequently, the main objective of the interdisciplinary study of both fortified settlements is to provide relevant information on how complex societies and hierarchical political systems were forged in western and central Europe, and how they imposed themselves on other socio-economic organisations.

A specimen-based phylogenetic analysis of Camarasaurus to clarify the systematic position of Europasaurus (additional support for Europe)

Knowing the phylogenetic position of an organism is one of the most basic points for the understanding of its biology and evolution. Europasaurus holgeri Mateus et al., 2006 is a peculiar dwarfed form of sauropod dinosaurs, which otherwise constitute the largest land animals that ever lived on this planet. Europasaurus thus gives us the possibility to study major transitions in body size from truly gigantic animals like Brachiosaurus to such relatively small-sized forms as Europasaurus in geologically short time intervals. Thereby we learn how and why such changes may occur. A firm phylogenetic framework is however crucial, but agreement on the position of Europasaurus has not yet been reached. In recent phylogenetic analyses, the dwarfed sauropod has been switching position between Brachiosauridae or a position more close to the genus Camarasaurus from North America. The project provides a phylogenetic analysis of Camarasaurus and thereby clarifies the systematic position of Europasaurus.

Structural investigations into hybrid FAS/PKS systems for the coordinated production of bioactive secondary metabolites (additional support for Europe)

Understanding reaction control in integrated megasynthase assembly lines is a multi-scale problem extending from understanding structural details of the individual catalytic centres (i.e. KR and KS domains), via understanding the structure of individual synthase complexes (i.e. the barrel structure of FAS), to finally describing how multiple synthases (i.e FAS and PKS) integrate to form assembly lines. Within the project the NorS complex as a paradigm for integrated megasynthases will be analysed. The complex will directly be purified from Aspergillus and/or from recombinant sources (co-expression in E. coli). Subsequently, the catalytic activity of the purified complex is monitored using functional assays and biophysical methods. Finally, single particle cryo-EM and molecular modelling is conducted to describe the structure of NorS. The ultimate aim is to provide insight into catalytic processes of fatty acid synthesis and polyketide synthesis, and to use the NorS scaffold for the construction of artificial assembly lines.

Nonlinear signal analysis of microelectrode recordings from epilepsy patients (additional support for Europe)

The aim of the project is to advance the understanding of neuronal dynamics in the brain of epilepsy patients. Many basic mechanisms of the disease epilepsy remain poorly understood. What interactions between neurons underlie epileptic seizures? Is the transition to a seizure abrupt and unpredictable, or does it involve detectable pre-seizure states? To address these and other problems, in-vivo microelectrode recordings from epilepsy patients will be analysed. The acquisition and study of these microelectrode recordings is subject of the ongoing main project. Previous studies in this field  are based on classical, linear signal analysis and the visual inspection of the microelectrode signals. However, it was shown that nonlinear signal analysis has decisive advantages over linear analysis in the study of conventional electrophysiological recordings from epilepsy patients. Therefore, nonlinear analysis will be applied to microelectrode recordings. Additionally, further methods will be devised for this project. These novel methods will be applicable to various experimental signals and thus have general scientific impact beyond this project.

Agricultural cooperatives as economic crisis-absorbers: The role of cooperative ownership and governance (Europaförderung)

Greece is now experiencing one of its most severe economic crises after the Second World War. A non-negligible percentage of urban population is moving to rural areas in order to make a living out of farming and related activities. The new rural inhabitants realize that they are faced with challenges related to the state of rural infrastructure as well as to the operation of agricultural markets. Agricultural cooperatives, which had a turbulent history in Greece, potentially play a major role in addressing these challenges. However, the ability of agricultural cooperatives to do so crucially depends on their ownership structures and governance practices. Against this background, the present project explores the way in which the ownership structures and governance practices of Greek agricultural cooperatives influence their crisis-absorbing capacity. The methodological approaches include desktop research, case studies, and econometric methods.
