On September 24, 2018, a cyber attack on the event-portalof the Volkswagen Foundation triggered several mass e-mailings. Personal user data remained protected.
In an e-mail, the Volkswagen Foundation informed all users affected by the cyber attack on the event-Portal on Sept. 24, 2018.
In the night from September 23 to 24, 2018, between midnight and 7.30 a.m., unknown perpetrators tried several times in vain to hack the address database in the event-portal of the Volkswagen Foundation. The attacks triggered a command that caused the system to overwrite all existing passwords. As a result, a standardized e-mail was sent several times to all the addresses stored in the event portal. The e-mails contained new passwords.
To the best of our knowledge, no personal user data or passwords were tapped. We are also happy to report that other databases maintained by the Volkswagen Foundation, such as the electronic application and report system, were not affected.
Even though our investigations rule out the possibility of the data being misused, the Foundation has decided to reset all passwords in the event portal. This is purely a precautionary measure. The Foundation informed all those affected of this in an e-mail sent on September 25, 2018.
