Location and Travel

The City of Hanover

Hanover is the capital of the federal state of Lower Saxony in the north-west of Germany. With a population of roughly 500.000 inhabitants, Hanover is the biggest city in Lower Saxony and one of the major centers of Northern Germany. Hanover is known for hosting the CeBIT, the world's largest and most international computer expo and other international annual commercial trade fairs. A major crossing point of railway lines and highways (Autobahnen), Hanover is easily accessible from any other major city in Germany.

From 1714 until 1837 Hanover was closely interlinked with Great Britain, Ireland and later on the United Kingdom. The former family seat of the Hanoverian Kings, Herrenhausen Palace, is located in the Herrenhausen Gardens. These beautiful gardens are Hanover’s most famous hallmark and one of the most important baroque gardens in Europe. Apart from the newly reconstructed ensemble, the city offers many attractive sights ranging from one of Europe’s most spectacular and modern zoo to the city lake Maschsee, popular with inhabitants and tourists alike, and a fair share of museums. Hanover is also known for being the greenest city in Germany, thanks to the large city forest Eilenriede, which covers 640 ha and is hence twice as large as News York City’s Central Park.
