"What is life?" - This fundamental question has been occupying mankind for centuries. Quite recently, research areas located especially at the interface between the natural and life sciences emerged that provide new insights on this question. Within the completed funding initiative, the Volkswagen Foundation has supported single investigator projects as well as (international) cooperative projects which hold promise of producing novel findings on principles of life. The majority of the projects are still running. The symposium will offer an international platform for scientific exchange based on the results achieved to date within the funding program. Established state-of-the-art as well as relevant developments in connected fields at the interface between the natural and life sciences will be addressed in 15 project presentations.
