This is a fascinating time in the fields of gene and cell therapies, especially with recent market authorizations of several gene and cell therapeutic approaches. The main theme of the international symposium in Hannover on March 16 to 18, 2020 is "Making Gene Therapy A Clinical Reality" Top speakers from around the world will present their current ground-breaking work and discuss the burning issues that need to be addressed in order to further advance the delivery of gene therapy to patients.
On Friday, March 13, 2020, the symposium will be preceded by a "public day", in which high school students and the general public will be given a general introduction into what is meant by gene and cell therapy as well as the opportunity for a peak behind the curtains of the daily laboratory work necessary to develop and validate these therapies. In addition, there will be an evening lecture for interested lay persons into the burning topics of gene therapy and genome editing.
On Monday, March 16, there will be an educational day for PhD students, MD students and MD/PhD students, during which leading experts will be available for questions and discussions regarding important topics such as vector optimization, use of stem cells, uses and challenges of designer nucleases, as well as how to advance gene therapy to the clinic and public market.
The scientific content of the symposium will span a range of important topics, such as critical analysis of the current state-of-the-art in gene and cell therapies, how best to deliver gene therapies and optimization of the therapeutic gene cargo. Furthermore, the therapeutic potential of novel combinations of gene therapy with cell sources like iPSC and stem cells will be presented for discussion. The symposium will also address evolving topics in gene and cell therapy, including novel approaches in cancer treatment, use of genome and epigenome modifications in gene and cell therapies and clinical translation of these therapeutic strategies. Emphasis will in addition be set to ethical considerations (in the unique format of a joint talk given by an ethicist and a scientist) and challenges for the future.
This year's Wolfram Ostertag Lecture will be held by Prof. David Williams, a leading gene therapy expert from Boston Children's Hospital at Harvard Medical School, on March 16.
