Land use, ecosystem services and human welfare in Central Asia (LUCA) - an interdisciplinary framework for the promotion of young scientists in Central Asia

The LUCA postgraduate programme for young scientists from Central Asia intends to build a platform for joint analysis of land use effects for a whole region, covering and involving participants from different countries of Central Asia. Hence, transnational scientific cooperation will be fostered. The programme aims to train young scientists from Central Asia on topics concerning the intrinsic interaction of people and their environment in vulnerable regions like Central Asia. The envisaged PhD topics representing the research component of the programme highlight critical land use aspects specific to Central Asian landscapes which cover diverse ecosystems, ranging from deserts to humid climates, from lowlands to mountains. Land use and its implications for ecosystem services are a prominent scientific and socio-economic concern linking the different landscapes. To fully understand the dimension of direct and indirect drivers of land use in Central Asia, it is essential to network various scientific disciplines in a multidisciplinary framework. Therefore, approaches from earth, environmental and socio-economic sciences are integrated into the LUCA programme.

Analysing multiple interrelationships between environmental and societal processes in mountainous regions of Georgia - Interdisciplinary research to foster sustainable land use, land development, and quality of life

The methodological concept of the research project involves three major steps: (I) the development of a consistent hierarchical classification of landscape patterns, (II) the analysis of interrelationships between environmental and societal processes under consideration of these patterns, and (III) the formulation of regionally differentiated recommendations for sustainable land use and land development. Step I will be mainly based on high-resolution digital maps and GIS analyses. The resulting common database will allow for calculating trade-offs between environmental, land-use dependent and socio-economic processes at multiple spatial scales and for formulating recommendations for sustainable land use and land development. To gain a better understanding of the complex interplay between the processes (step II), these will be qualitatively and quantitatively analysed in a network of four project units (A to D) including eight subprojects. Project unit A will analyse changes in landscape structure and land use from about 1960 to 2009. Project unit B focuses on climate change and mass wasting events. Project unit C concentrates on changes in phytodiversity, in terms of vegetation and root-soil systems. Project unit D analyses societal changes at the landscape and regional scale. In all subprojects, disciplinary analyses will go hand-in-hand with interdisciplinary research on interrelationships between environmental and societal processes. Results will build the basis for the interdisciplinary formulation of recommendations on sustainable land use and land development in step III to be discussed with governmental organisations and NGO's in Georgia.

Die stalinistischen Massenverfolgungen in Georgien 1937-1938. Die Perspektive der kaukasischen Peripherie

Das Projekt beschäftigt sich mit der Umsetzung und den Auswirkungen der stalinistischen Massenverfolgungen 1937/38 in Georgien und setzt sich zum Ziel, auf Grundlage der Bestände des "Archive Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia" einen kommentierten Dokumentenband im Umfang von etwa 500 Druckseiten zu erstellen. Kooperationspartnerin in Georgien ist die Leiterin des Lehrstuhls für russische und georgische Beziehungen an der Javakhishvili Universität in Tbilisi, Professorin Dr. Dali Kandelaki. Projektbearbeiter auf deutscher Seite ist PD Dr. Marc Junge. Das Projekt steht unter der wissenschaftlichen Leitung von Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. Bernd Bonwetsch.

Algebraic and geometric properties of (conformal) mechanics with extended supersymmetry

The main goal of the project is to get further insights into the geometrical, group-theoretical and algebraic structure of one-dimensional theories with extended supersymmetry, into their close relationships with higher-dimensional theories, integrable models and condensed matter physics. Fundamental properties of super (conformal) mechanics will be brought to light by studying the dualities and hidden symmetries of the models. New models of quantum mechanics with extended supersymmetry will be constructed and applied to analyze the AdS/CFT correspondence, to exhibit integrable structures in supersymmetric theories, to explore (super)extensions of the Hall effect and study the partial breaking of supersymmetry in superparticle models. A general result of this investigation will be an improved classification of the one-dimensional supermultiplets and related supersymmetric mechanics models as well as their application to the construction of supersymmetric integrable multi-particle systems of Calogero type and their applications in condensed matter physics.

Electromagnetic (EM) methods to study the inner structure of mud volcanoes in Perekishkul, Azerbaijan

This project aims to assess the inner structure of mud volcanoes by means of low-cost electromagnetic methods that are capable of detecting vertical geotectonic boundaries and fault zones and are able to confine and improve structural models of mud volcanoes in the Perekishkul area in Azerbaijan. A comprehensive view inside the inner structure of the mud volcanoes is envisaged. Mud volcanoes have relevance to climate processes by means of methane out-gassing that is likely to contribute significantly to the global methane budget and therefore impacts the climate dynamics. In addition, mud volcanoes are connected with anticline uplifts and with large deposits of hydrocarbons. Another aspect is to provide reliable assessment of seismic hazard problems. In order to establish a long lasting perspective of the project an ample transfer of knowledge towards Azerbaijan and diversification of the partner's capacity will be accomplished.

Das Stipendienprogramm richtet sich an junge Rechtswissenschaftler/-innen (Doktorand/inn/en, Postdoktorand/inn/en) aus den ehemals zur Sowjetunion gehörenden Staaten des Kaukasus und Mittelasiens und soll dazu beitragen, dem Privatrecht als eigentlichem rechtlichen Rahmen einer Zivilgesellschaft in der Denkweise und Wertschätzung dieser Länder zu größerer Bedeutung zu verhelfen. Den Stipendiat/inn/en wird Gelegenheit gegeben, im Rahmen eines längeren Aufenthalts am Hamburger Institut Abhandlungen zu Themen ihres Heimatrechts im Bereich des Zivil- bzw. Wirtschaftsrechts zu erstellen, und zwar jeweils mit vergleichendem Blick auf das westliche - nicht zuletzt deutsche - Recht. Migration and Remittances in Central Asia: The Case of Kazakhstan and Tajikistan

The project aims to explore recent migration determinants and patterns in the Central Asian states Kazakhstan and Tajikistan on the individual and household level, and seeks to investigate the scope, transmission and use of remittances. It is planed to undertake a quantitative household survey and a qualitative interview study with respondents, who had actually migrated (ethno-survey). The analysis of these survey data is expected to produce and enhance knowledge in the field of migration and remittances in both countries and allow formulating policy relevant recommendations. Furthermore, the project is designed to strengthen research contacts between German and Central Asian researchers and to foster capacity building among scholars in Central Asia.

Biodiversity and Evolution of the Central Asian and Caucasian vipers (Viperidae)

Venomous snakes of the family Viperidae are numerous in Central Asia and the Caucasus. It is, however, not clear how many species of vipers exist in the region and how they are distributed. This information is crucial for medical application of antisera against snake bite. The aim of this project is to revive venomous snake research in the Caucasus and Central Asia by applying modern molecular genetic methods. Goals and by-products of this research shall be: (1) elucidating the evolution and phylogeography of viperid snakes in the region; (2) reconstructing species formation processes, both completed and still running; (3) establishing a stable taxonomy of viperid snakes in the area; (4) establishment of an international research network with Turkey and Iran; (5) stimulating further research in the applied fields of toxinology and medical treatment of snake bite.

Georgische Palimpsesthandschriften

Im Rahmen des deutsch-georgischen Partnerschaftsvorhabens sollen die wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung der ältesten, in Palimpsestform vorliegenden Textzeugnisse der georgischen Sprache auf eine zeitgemäße Grundlage gestellt und neue Erkenntnisse über die Frühgeschichte der georgischen Schriftlichkeit bzw. die Entwicklung christlicher Traditionen im Kaukasus gewonnen werden. Ziel ist, die in den Handschriften enthaltenen Texte einer wissenschaftlichen Edition zugänglich zu machen und im Rahmen der Kooperation Nachwuchskräfte systematisch an die Arbeit mit Palimpsesthandschriften heranzuführen. Kooperationspartner in Georgien sind die Staatlichen Museen Georgiens (Prof. Dr. David Lortkipanidze) und das Forschungs-Laboratorium Orioni der Staatlichen Universität Tbilisi (Dr. Darejan Tvaltvadze).

Transfer of Heavy Metals into the Food Chain from Heavily Polluted Soils of an Irrigation District in Southern Georgia

The valley of the Mashavera River, about 100 km south of the capital Tbilisi, is an area with very fertile soils of more than 300 km2 in size. Cereals, vegetables and fruits are grown for the conurbations of Eastern Georgia under irrigation due to the aridity of the climate in Eastern Georgia. The river water used for irrigation is polluted with mining waste from a Cu and gold mine in the mountainous region of the middle reaches of the Mashavera River. Furthermore, wastewater from a floatation plant, erosion material from floatation waste deposits, and acid mine drainage has led to high concentrations of dissolved and suspended sulfidic heavy metals (HM). The proposed cooperation project aims at a detailed investigation of the mechanisms and the extent of the transfer of HM from weakly alkaline soils into the food chain. Furthermore, the suitability and effectiveness of a remediation strategy will be tested in field and greenhouse experiments, and the effect of the HM pollution and the remediation on the sensitive habitat function of soils will be evaluated on the basis of microbiological investigations. The project intends to transfer knowledge as well as important impulses for the introduction of environmental standards for soil conservation and food hygiene in Georgia.

The Energy Sector and the Political Stability of Regimes in the Caspian Area. A Comparison of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan

Aserbaidschan und Kasachstan - die wichtigsten Rohstoffproduzenten im Kaspischen Raum - haben sich in den letzten Jahren aufgrund ihrer Erdöl- und Erdgasvorräte wirtschaftlich sehr dynamisch entwickelt. Ungeklärt ist dabei, welchen Einfluss der Wirtschaftsboom auf die Beziehung zwischen den wirtschaftlichen und politischen Eliten beider Länder hat. Dies will das Projekt untersuchen und dabei insbesondere durch die Analyse informeller Netzwerke zeigen, wie die Gewinne aus dem Energiesektor zwischen den Akteuren verteilt werden und in welcher Form der Energiesektor zur Stabilität der autoritären Regime beiträgt. Bearbeiterin des Projekts auf deutscher Seite ist Dr. Andreas Heinrich. Projektpartner sind in Aserbaidschan das "Public Finance Monitoring Center" (Kenan R. Aslanli) und in Kasachstan die "Central Asian Foundation for Developing Democracy" (Dr. Tolganai Umbetalieva).

Georgian-German non-commutative partnership (topology, geometry, algebra)

This proposal aims at supporting joint research projects between German and Georgian mathematicians in the areas of topology, geometry, and algebra. We plan to study fundamental questions in K-theory, homotopy theory, noncommutative geometry, and categorical and homological algebra, using, in particular, methods of enriched category theory. More concretely, it is planned to study the following topics: smooth K-theory for locally convex algebras, the connection between algebraic and topological K-theory and group cohomology , equivariant and Hopf-cyclic homology, cohomology of groups, spectra characterizing KK-theory , applications of derived functors and derived categories to cyclic homology and K-theory, structural properties of K-theory of bimonoidal categories, and formal group laws.

Economic Transformation, Household Behavior and Well-Being in Central Asia: The Case of Kyrgyzstan

The project aims (1) to extend the available knowledge about the socio-economic processes in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia and (2) to improve research capacity (concerning both methodology and analysis) within the Central Asian region. To achieve these goals, the project will first establish a panel of households in Kyrgyzstan, representative at the national and regional levels, and collect household- and individual-level data covering demographics, welfare, coping strategies and labor market experience of individuals and households. These data will then be used to investigate the well-being and behavior of households. The analysis will focus on four areas - poverty, inequality, coping strategies and labor market developments - with an emphasis on dynamic issues, such as transitions in and out of poverty, income mobility and unemployment duration. The partners in Kyrgyzstan are the Center for Social and Economic Research (CASE-Kyrgyzstan) and the American University of Central Asia, both based in Bishkek. The project also includes Humboldt University Berlin.

Aufbau eines Studiengangs Projektmanagement (Bau und Immobilien) an der Telavi State University in Georgien

Das deutsch-georgische Gemeinschaftsvorhaben hat den Aufbau eines nach den Bologna-Kriterien eingerichteten und akkreditierten Studiengangs mit dem Titel "Business Organisation and Management (Construction and Real Estate)" an der Telavi State University zum Ziel. Darin sollen die für das Projektmanagement in der Bau- und Immobilienwirtschaft wesentlichen ökonomischen, technischen und rechtlichen Lehrinhalte des Bauwesens vermittelt werden, ergänzt durch wirtschaftlich orientierte Planungs-, Überwachungs-, Steuerungs- und Bewertungstechniken. Innovative Lehrmethoden wie Tandem-Teaching von georgischen und deutschen Dozenten, die Einbeziehung von Hochschuldozenten und Lehrbeauftragten aus der Bauwirtschaft und insbesondere die einsemestrige Arbeit an Realprojekten sollen den Praxisbezug der Lehre fördern. Zeitlich gliedert sich der Aufbau des Studiengangs in eine Konzeptionsphase von einem halben Jahr, eine Implementierungsphase von zwei Jahren und eine Ausbauphase von drei Jahren.
Die Hochschule Biberach als bundesweit einzige Bau-Fachhochschule möchte mit diesem Vorhaben eines ihrer Spezialprofile exportfähig machen: die Steuerung und Organisation von komplexen Bau- und Immobilienprojekten, wie sie im Biberacher Studiengang Projektmanagement erfolgreich vermittelt werden. Neben dem unmittelbaren Transfer von Lehrinhalten und Fertigkeiten soll es darum gehen, das Spezialwissen des Projektingenieurs im Bau- und Immobilienbereich im internationalen Kontext wissenschaftlich zu reflektieren. Hiervon sollen die georgische als auch die deutsche Seite profitieren: In Georgien werden Studierende an die Standards und Techniken in Deutschland und der Europäischen Union herangeführt. Gleichzeitig werden auch für die im Kaukasusraum expandierenden deutschen und europäischen Unternehmen Fachleute ausgebildet.

Hazard assessment and outburst flood estimation of naturally dammed lakes in Central Asia

Four key locations with two examples each in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and the Russian Altai Mountains will be investigated in detail to estimate outburst mechanisms and processes under current regional environmental conditions. Measurements of topographical and sedimentological conditions of the dams, their stability and the hydro-meteorological dynamics of the lakes will be carried out by automatic stations during a period of two years considering the variability in different seasons. The data gained will allow development of different plausible scenarios for modelling and simulation of possible dam failure and related potential outburst floods. Additionally, an inventory of other dangerous lakes in Central Asia will be compiled based on published references and knowledge of local and regional experts. Depending on the accessibility of the lakes outside the four key locations, a ranking of the other most dangerous lakes will be developed - ideally based on short time investigations of the stability of the dams in the field.

Cataloguing Arabic-script Documents at the Samarqand State Museum of History, Art and Archeology

Mit dem Ziel, neue Grundlagen für eine Sozialgeschichte Mittelasiens im 19./20. Jahrhundert zu schaffen, bearbeitet das Projekt einen bislang so gut wie unerschlossenen Urkundenbestand des Museums für Geschichte, Kunst und Archäologie in Samarkand. Als Ergebnis soll ein Katalog der Urkunden entstehen, der sowohl in Buchform als auch online veröffentlicht wird und in der letzteren Version auch einen Teil der Urkunden direkt verfügbar macht. Beteiligt sind am Projekt auf usbekischer Seite zudem das International Institute for Central Asian Studies (UNESCO) in Samarkand sowie das Institut für Orientalistik der Akademie der Wissenschaften der Republik Usbekistan in Taschkent.

Quantum field theory and quantum Monte Carlo approaches to the Bose- Einstein condensation

The project involves various aspects of the theoretical and numerical investigations of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in the framework of the quantum field theoretical and Quantum Monte Carlo (numerical) methods. The phase transitions into the BEC of both homogeneous and magnetically trapped atomic gases, as well as the superfluidity of 4He in porous media will be considered. The critical temperatures, critical exponents, structure factors and other properties of the transitions will be investigated. The results and theoretical predictions of the project will give a new and significant insight in understanding the behavior of the matter at very low temperatures.

String surfaces and integrable structures in the AdS/CFT correspondence

The research program of the project is devoted to recent aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence. This correspondence is one of the main topics of research in theoretical particle physics. It relates gauge field theories in Minkowski space to string theories in higher dimensional backgrounds. Its most remarkable property is its weak/strong coupling duality, which yields new tools for nonperturbative studies in a wide range of strongly coupled systems. The investigations will be, in particular, connected to the interrelation between scattering amplitudes, string world surfaces, Wilson loops and integrable structures in the full AdS/CFT framework, as well as in more simplified models. These issues are at present in the focus of research. The visits in Berlin, besides the scientific cooperation, also should enable the Georgian PhD students to benefit in part from graduate training programs in Germany.
