Multimedia Encyclopedic Lexicon of the Tuamotuan and Marquesan Languages

The project intends to build up a scientific and general purposes. To an unprecedented extent, MEL makes use of the possibilities of the new electronic media by three innovations: (1) flexible linking between lexical content and media files of various kinds, as well as between related lexical items; (2) opening the lexicon to the collaborative active participation of users; (3) the combination of the lexica of two languages. The MEL will contribute to language maintenance and language revival of the endangered Marquesan and Tuamotuan languages, not only as a product, but also by the process of compiling it together with the speech communities. Thus the writing of vernacular definitions for both lexical databases will be the beginning of a monolingual lexicon which is a vital tool for any kind of language revitalization measurements. Furthermore, the active involvement of the speech communities in learning to use the LEXUS tool as well as acquiring the basic methodology of lexicography, will enable the language communities to continue the documentation work after the project.

A Pan-dialectal Documentation of Taa. Folgeprojekt zum Thema "Documentation of Western !Xoon"

This follow-up project aims at finalizing the documentation of the Taa language complex which belongs to the Tuu family (generally known as the southern branch of South African Khoisan) and is spoken by a few hundred socially and economically marginalized speakers in Namibia and Botswana. The two Namibian varieties under investigation by the DoBeS team are West !Xoon and 'N|ohan. The linguistic differences between the two varieties are found to be much greater than expected. Both had previously not been subject to in-depth research and documentation. At the same time, the speakers of these two varieties are socially heavily intermingled and depend sociopolitically on each other in many ways, cooperating, but at the same time competing for the same resources and constantly in a struggle to mark themselves off at the expense of the other group. The project aims at the documentation of these different varieties, carried out by an interdisciplinary team of three linguists and one anthropologist. In linguistics, special emphasis is given to the identification of click parameters, the tonal system, semantic and morphosyntactic aspects of noun classification, and serial verb constructions. Anthropological research focusses on ethno-history, cultural mapping including land use and subsistence patterns, as well as selected aspects of social organization.

Fortsetzung des Projekts "Documentation of =Akhoe-Hai//om, a Khoisan language spoken by hunter-gatherers in central-northern Namibia. A multi-media compilation of language and culture in endangered social practices"

The =Akhoe Hai//om speech community is under great linguistic and cultural pressure arising from the rapid social change which continues to marginalize the speakers and discourages them from using their language. The overall number of speakers is approximately 600 speakers. While a low number of speakers is not necessarily an indicator of language endangerment, it is so in the Northern Namibian context where medical treatment is scarce, and malnourishment and diseases such as HIV/AIDS are rampant. =Akhoe Hai//om speakers suffer from the fact that their language is looked down upon as a language of "Bushmen". =Akhoe Hai//om is the only group of Khoisan speakers still engaged in hunting and gathering so that their language includes vocabulary and language use related to this ancient lifestile. The main objective of the project's extension period is to turn the potentials of the documentation into an effective resource for future linguistic and anthropological research on this complex tone language.

The success of the project in terms of generating a large amount of linguistic and anthropological "raw material" requires careful organization in order to maximize its resourcefulness. The Team seeks to advance the annotation and processing of these materials by taking full advantage of the multi-media character of the collection.

Fortsetzung des Projekts "Beaver knowledge systems: documentation of a Canadian First Nation language from a placenames' perspective"

Beaver is a highly endangered language that is still spoken in several communities in two Western Canadian provinces, British Columbia and Alberta. Speaker age ranges from older than 45 to older than 70 in other communities. Besides trying to provide a good basic documentation of the hitherto undescribed language, the project follows an integrational approach: the central topic concerns the personal, historical, and mythical conceptualization of places and placenames. The ethnographic as well as the linguistic discovery processes relate to this topic and proceed from there to further analysis. Ethnographically these types of narratives tell of traditional hunter-gatherer patterns of subsistence and land use, linguistically the texts provide a wealth of spatial terms that are almost unique to the verb morphology of Athabaskan languages. In the extension period the project aims to proceed with the transcription of the recordings: priority is given to the video recordings relating to place and the prophet tradition, since the knowledge of these will be otherwise lost. Additionally more recordings will be made that will embellish and supplement the present corpus to cover more areas of language use.

Documentation of Gorani, an endangered language of the Kermansah province (West Iran)

This project aims at documenting the language and cultural practices of the Gorani speech community in western Iran. This community is characterised by their adherence to a heterodox Islamic sect known as the Ahl-e Haqq. Its origins are controversial, but have been linked to another heterodox sect, the Yezidis among the Kurds of North Iraq and Southeast Turkey, and may have roots going back to Zoroastrianism. The Goran number at most 1.500 speakers, inhabiting three villages near the townships of Gahvare around 60 km. from the regional centre of Kermanshah, and the village Zarde more to the west. Although the Goran are now small minority languages, they actually have a literary tradition going back some centuries. Both the language and the religion are under threat from the dominant state language and religion, but also from the local dominance of Kurdish as the lingua franca in the region. The project brings together a unique team of linguists, experts on comparative Iranian religions, and musicologists with extensive experience of field research in an Iranian context, and will work closely with colleagues at research institutions in Tehran, with the Goran diaspora community there, and with local researchers at the University of Kermanshah.

Documentation of Savosavo, a Papuan language of the Solomon Islands

The project seeks to document the linguistic and cultural knowledge of the speakers of Savosavo, an East Papuan language spoken on Savo Island in the Solomon Islands. There are no closely related languages, and Savosavo is severely threatened by a number of socio-economic factors. Solomon Islands Pijin, the lingua franca of the region, is coming in to replace Savosavo in more and more contexts, reducing it to a home language. The fact that Savo Island, a small island with a diameter of about 6 km, is a dormant volcano and that there is an pending danger of an eruption also poses a threat to the language; the dispersal of the Savosavo speakers resulting from an evacuation to the surrounding islands, which are all inhabited by speakers of other languages, would almost certainly lead to the language falling out of use within one generation.

The thematic focus of the project will be "local history, culture and environment". This topic will be approached by collecting narratives, conversations and procedural texts on four focal research areas: (1) all aspects pertaining to living on a volcano, (2) biographies and eye-witness accounts of recent historical events such as the Second World War and the national independence in 1978, (3) traditional knowledge and customs, (4) discussion on topics in the field of hortative discourse.
